UMATI  - Universal macine tool interface - This is an initiative between VDW, the German machine tool organisation and 17 partner companies to agree and implement a common secure protocol to enable communication to and from the machine tool and external software. You can read about it here in the VDW site. This is a major step forward in making Industry 4.0 a reality and making it posible to share data.

Things are moving on with UMATI as it is being extended to cover all types of equipment in the workshop and not just machine tools. The idea is to be able to monitor and report on all types of equipment and extend the application of UMATI to many more industries. This Youtube video of a recent UMATI press conference explains.
