Adaptive measuring
I was reading an interesting article from Blum Novotest about on machine measuring for tools, and workpieces, which uses  analogue rather than digital measurements. Apparently it is 60% quicker for on machine measuring and can take account of coolant or dirt on the tool giving higher levels of accuracy.

The benefit of on machine measuring is that it is part of the process and with the information you can make changes during the cutting process. Off machine tool setting ignores many factors such as temperature and tool or spindle run out.
