Build quality in AM
Renishaw has launched a new product called InfiniAM Sonic, which uses acoustic receptors to detect vibrations during the build of its powder bed machines.

The theory behind it is that each laser pass locally heats up the powder and the component and introduces minute stresses into the part. The receptors can triangulate the position of the vibration and also the magnitude and can build up a picture of what is happening during the build process. This way it can verify the quality of the build and show areas where the stress may be so large as to cause a fracture or weakness in the product or its support structure.
