Makino® Announces the Launch of the Slim3n Three-Axis Vertical Machining Center

Makino Inc. introduces the Slim3n three-axis vertical machining center, a high-performance, space-efficient solution for component and part processes demanding turnkey and automation to IMTS 2022. Equally suited for single-machine job shop applications as well as part of a multi-machine installation in a high-volume/low-mix production environments, the Slim3n expands the Makino portfolio of machines at the core of its turnkey and automation solutions for market areas including automotive, die casting, medical, and more.

A Milling Machine That Happens to Drill and Tap Well

With a 55mm spindle bearing diameter and HSK-A50 spindle interface, the Slim3n is a vertical machining center that does not shy away from the radial forces of milling. A 50 m/min rapid rate driven by a 1.5 G Z-axis acceleration means the Slim3n is equally competent in drilling and tapping applications.

Small Enough to Move in Your Space Yet Big Enough to Accommodate Large Workpieces

The Slim3n, while only 58” wide x 191” long, including the rear discharge Lift-Up Chip Conveyor (LUCC) and coolant tank, can accommodate a workpiece size up to 38.4" long x 19.7" wide x 22.8" tall. Long (12.6”) and big (Ø5.5”) tools can be used without interference.

Higher Productivity for a Variety of Applications and Materials

The workpiece in a Slim3n stays stationary on a permanent table (23.6" x 15.7" fixed table) with a load capacity of 881 pounds. The spindle moves relative to the fixed workpiece, allowing for greater X-, Y- and Z-axis travel (19.7", 15.7" and 15.7" of travel on the X, Y and Z-axis, respectively). Motion characteristics of a Slim3n include: 50 m/min (1,968 ipm) rapid rate, 20 m/min (787 ipm) feed rate, X- and Y-axis acceleration/deceleration rate of 1.1 G and Z-axis at 1.5 G.

Included in the standard configuration of the Makino Slim3n machine is a highly productive 16,000 rpm HSK-A50 spindle that blends power, torque and speed for a wide variety of materials and applications. The Makino Slim3n can also be configured with an 8,000 rpm HSK-A50 spindle for ferrous metals and applications that benefit from higher torque levels. With an armless, direct access, 26-tool tool magazine, the Makino Slim3n has the capacity for a wide array of tooling.

Seamless Automation

The Makino Slim3n can be configured with an integrated, automatic pallet changer (APC) with a 21.6" x 11.8" pallet and a 4.5-second pallet change time. It can also integrate with a wide assortment of material handling systems – from manual operator transfer to automatic transfer featuring conveyors and loaders to unattended gantry and robotic systems.

A More Compact and Cost-Efficient Alternative

Based on one of the machine tool industry's most productive and consistent CNC machining platforms, the Slim3n was built from the ground up for speed, precision and performance. Customers looking to design a new component manufacturing process or assimilate a machine into an existing process will find the Slim3n a cost-and space-efficient addition to their fleet.
