Daimler Truck North America plans to build a new manufacturing facility in the United States, with production targeted to begin in 2029. Construction is expected to start in late 2026 — but only once a site is selected. That sequencing matters.
The facility will use advanced production technology and flexible manufacturing systems designed to improve efficiency, resilience, and responsiveness to customer demand, allowing DTNA to build a broad range of vehicle configurations.
What leadership is saying
"The facility supports the group's long-term growth plans for North America and its ability to respond faster and more flexibly to customers' needs."
— Karin Rådström, president and chief executive of Daimler Truck
"The investment reflects confidence in the future of commercial transportation and the strength of the North American market."
— John O'Leary, president and chief executive of DTNA
Jobs, suppliers, and an 80-year footprint
The plant is projected to create thousands of jobs over time. Beyond direct employment, DTNA says the facility will contribute to the local economy through partnerships with suppliers, educational institutions, and community organisations — the kind of ecosystem-building that typically determines whether a new plant ramps smoothly or struggles for skilled labour in its early years.
DTNA has a long history in the US, having manufactured commercial vehicles there for more than 80 years. It currently operates plants across the Carolinas, while its headquarters and engineering hub are in Portland, Oregon. The new facility will add to this existing footprint.
What to watch
The open variable is location. With site selection still underway and construction tied to that decision, the late 2026 groundbreaking target carries a clear dependency. For manufacturing professionals, the more interesting signal is strategic: a major truck OEM is treating flexible manufacturing systems as a first-order design requirement for new capacity, not an upgrade path.
