Mills CNC put ten multi-tasking machine tools through their paces at its Innovation Day in Leamington Spa, with over 100 visitors attending. The Heller HF 5500 FLEX, a horizontal simultaneous 5-axis mill-turn, machined a large complex aerospace blisk from solid. The enquiries from the day have not yet become orders - the full announcement covers the machine specifications, the demo and what Mills plans to do with the leads.

Ten machines, over 100 visitors, one day.

What ran

Ten DN Solutions multi-tasking machine tools were under demonstration at the company's Technology Campus in Leamington Spa, including two DVF 4000 simultaneous 5-axis machining centres and a DNX 2100S mill-turn.

Mills' low-volume, high-mix T4 series and SYNERGi automation systems were alongside them, and Heller UK general manager Tom Hughes gave the keynote.

Ten machine tools under demonstration, and over 100 engineers through the door. What were they actually looking at?

The Heller

The HF 5500 FLEX is a horizontal simultaneous 5-axis mill-turn with an HSK-T spindle rated at 45kW, 12,000rpm and 400N-m, a 630mm rotary tilting table and a 50-tool ATC.

It has no integrated pallet changer. Workpiece setup is direct, and the machine can be tied into external linear or rotary pallet systems.

The blisk

The machine ran a large complex aerospace blisk from solid throughout the event, and is already in use by aerospace, automotive and power generation component manufacturers.

The HF 5500 FLEX machined a blisk from solid. Which part of a 5-axis mill-turn makes that difficult?

What happens next

Tony Dale, Mills CNC group CEO, said the Heller and the DN Solutions machines were the technology stars of the show, and that the company is following up every enquiry.

He expects many to become sales over the next few weeks and months.

Mills is following up every enquiry from the day. What would make those enquiries turn into orders?
