Renishaw extends CMM inspection reach with PH20 PLUS 5-axis touch-trigger system

Renishaw has introduced the PH20 PLUS 5-axis touch-trigger system for coordinate measuring machines (CMMs), positioning it as the successor to its established PH20 head. The headline figure is reach: the new system delivers over a 50% increase in inspection reach compared with the original head, opening up features deep inside parts that previously sat outside the accessible measurement volume.

Longer probes, deeper access

The capability jump comes from a redesigned kinematic mount that supports longer probe configurations. With a 50 mm stylus, the PH20 PLUS head provides a maximum working length of up to 300 mm from the centre of the A-axis — an additional 107 mm of reach over the outgoing system. For manufacturers measuring deep bores, internal features, and hard-to-access geometry, that is a meaningful expansion of what a touch-trigger head can interrogate without repositioning the part.

"With PH20 PLUS, we've focused on extending capability which we think will appeal to both existing PH20 customers and those with measurement requirements which could previously not be met by the existing head," said Nathan Fielder, Product Manager at Renishaw.

Upgrade path without the rip-and-replace

Renishaw has clearly designed the PH20 PLUS system with its installed base in mind. The PH20 head has been in the market since 2010, and the new system maintains compatibility with existing TP20 probe modules via the PB20 adaptor — protecting prior tooling investment and easing the transition for current users. New PE20 modules interface directly with the head's larger kinematic mount.

Integration is similarly straightforward. The PH20 PLUS system is fully compatible with Renishaw's UCC controller, integrating in the same way as the original PH20 system and functioning as a direct, drop-in replacement for existing CMM installations.

Automated module changing

Supporting the head is a new modular rack system developed for automatic and repeatable probe module changing. The rack mounts to an MRS2 rail, which can be installed on the CMM bed or directly onto the machine frame. A powered PCR20 rack provides a standalone option for holding multiple probe modules and accessories.
