The successor to a throughput workhorse

Renishaw has introduced the PH20 PLUS 5-axis touch-trigger system for coordinate measuring machines (CMMs), launched in September 2026 as a direct replacement for its established PH20 head. The headline figure: the new system offers over 50% increase in inspection reach compared to the original PH20 head.

That matters for metrology teams. The original PH20 touch-trigger system, launched in 2010, utilizes head motion technology from the REVO® 5-axis measurement system and earned broad adoption by boosting CMM throughput. The PH20 PLUS system keeps that foundation while addressing a persistent limitation — access to features deep inside parts and in hard-to-reach areas.

Longer probes, deeper access

The key mechanical change is a redesigned kinematic mount that supports longer probe configurations. With a 50 mm stylus, the PH20 PLUS head offers a maximum working length of up to 300 mm. The redesign delivers an additional 107 mm of reach, expanding the accessible measurement volume.

The system is based on the TP20 probe platform and introduces new PE20 modules. Compatibility is a deliberate design choice: the PH20 PLUS system is compatible with the existing range of TP20 modules, excluding the extended force module, and existing modules can be used via the PB20 adaptor — protecting prior tooling investment.

"With PH20 PLUS, we've focused on extending capability which we think will appeal to both existing PH20 customers and those with measurement requirements which could previously not be met by the existing head," said Nathan Fielder, Product Manager at Renishaw.

Automated changing and drop-in integration

A new modular rack system has been developed for automatic and repeatable probe module changing with the PH20 PLUS head. It mounts to an MRS2 rail, while the powered PCR20 rack provides a standalone solution for holding multiple probe modules and accessories.

On the control side, the PH20 PLUS system is fully compatible with Renishaw's UCC controller, integrating the same way as the original PH20 — a genuine drop-in replacement rather than a re-engineering exercise.

See it at IMTS 2026

The PH20 PLUS system will be demonstrated at IMTS 2026 on the booths of various CMM manufacturers, with Renishaw staff available at booths 134314 and 134524. For existing PH20 users weighing an upgrade, the pitch is straightforward: reuse existing part programmes and measurement strategies, gain reach.
