Workforce growth: Employment has risen from around 25 people at the October 2012 opening to around 950 today.

  • Anniversary milestone: Renishaw is celebrating 15 years since acquiring the 193-acre Miskin site in South Wales from Robert Bosch Ltd in September 2011.
  • Expansion investment: A £70 million development announced in 2022 will ultimately double the size of the site, with total investment to date around £150 million.
  • Capacity gains: Hall 3 brings usable space to 617,000 sq ft, rising to 880,000 sq ft once Hall 4 is completed; Hall 4 will be partially occupied due to encoder demand from semiconductor equipment manufacturers.
  • Sustainability focus: Both new halls are designed to achieve Net Zero Carbon in Operation, supporting Renishaw's 2028 Net Zero commitment.

Renishaw is celebrating two milestones at once: the 15th anniversary of its purchase of the Miskin site in South Wales, and the completion of the first phase of a £70 million development announced in 2022. When fully realised, that investment will double the size of the facility.

From 25 employees to around 950

The scale of change at Miskin is striking. Renishaw acquired the 193-acre site, located to the west of Cardiff, from Robert Bosch Ltd in September 2011. When the facility was formally opened in October 2012 by then First Minister of Wales, Carwyn Jones (now Lord Jones), it employed around 25 people. Today that figure stands at around 950.

Spending has matched that headcount growth. Renishaw has invested around £150 million in the site to date, covering the acquisition, refurbishment of legacy buildings, development of new halls and advanced manufacturing equipment. That equipment now includes 134 CNC machine tools producing around one million parts per month.

Hall 3 complete, Hall 4 next

Once Hall 4 is completed, the total will reach 880,000 sq ft (81,765 sqm).

Hall 3 manufactures the company's metal additive manufacturing (AM) systems and AGILITY® co-ordinate measuring machines (CMMs), supporting demand for its precision metrology, additive manufacturing and position measurement products. Hall 4, meanwhile, will be partially occupied in response to demand for position encoders from semiconductor equipment manufacturers — a sign that the new capacity is already being pulled into service rather than sitting idle.

Built for Net Zero — and for people

On the workforce side, the company has invested in a new employee wellbeing centre incorporating a restaurant and fitness suite, alongside a 2 km perimeter walking route.

Jim Long, Director of Group Manufacturing, framed the investment as a long-term bet on UK manufacturing:

“Our long-term commitment to manufacturing is exemplified by the investment that we have made in Miskin over the past 15 years and I would like to thank the many people from across our business who have supported the development of this world-class facility.”
“The significant ongoing investment by our Board to increase our production capabilities demonstrates a huge vote of confidence in our manufacturing operations and people, at an exciting time for the business.”
