New hardware: A redesigned kinematic mount supports longer probe configurations via new PE20 modules.
- Extended reach: The PH20 PLUS delivers over 50% more inspection reach than the original PH20 head, with a maximum working length of 300 mm using a 50 mm stylus — an additional 107 mm.
- Backwards compatibility: Existing TP20 modules work via the PB20 adaptor, and the system drops into installations using Renishaw's UCC controller.
- Automated changing: A modular rack system on an MRS2 rail, plus the standalone PCR20 rack, enables repeatable probe module changing.
Renishaw has introduced the PH20 PLUS 5-axis touch-trigger system for coordinate measuring machines (CMMs), unveiled in September 2026 as a replacement for the established PH20 head. The headline figure: an increase of over 50% in inspection reach, delivering a maximum working length of up to 300 mm with a 50 mm stylus — an additional 107 mm of reach over the original system.
For manufacturers probing features deep inside parts or in hard-to-access areas, that extra reach is the point. The original PH20 head, launched in 2010, built its reputation on head motion technology developed for the multi-award-winning REVO® 5-axis measurement system. The PH20 PLUS keeps that foundation and pushes the geometry further.
A redesigned mount enables longer probes
The reach gain comes from hardware, not software. The PH20 PLUS features a redesigned kinematic mount on its A-axis that supports longer probe configurations. New PE20 modules, based on the industry-standard TP20 probe system, interface directly with the head via this larger mount and are available in a range of lengths to suit different applications.
"With PH20 PLUS, we've focused on extending capability which we think will appeal to both existing PH20 customers and those with measurement requirements which could previously not be met by the existing head," said Nathan Fielder, Product Manager at Renishaw.
Upgrade path protects existing investment
Renishaw has clearly designed the PH20 PLUS with its installed base in mind. The system maintains compatibility with existing TP20 probe modules via the PB20 adaptor, so customers can retain current hardware, stylus configurations, and part programmes. The system is also fully compatible with Renishaw's UCC controller and integrates in the same way as the original PH20 — a direct, drop-in replacement for existing CMM installations.
Supporting automation, a new modular rack system has been developed for automatic and repeatable probe module changing. The rack mounts to an MRS2 rail, installable on the CMM bed or machine frame, while the powered PH20 PLUS PCR20 rack offers a standalone option for holding multiple probe modules and accessories.
See it at IMTS 2026
The PH20 PLUS 5-axis touch-trigger system will be demonstrated at IMTS 2026 on the booths of various CMM manufacturers, with Renishaw staff available at the Quality Assurance booths 134314 and 134524.
