Sundyne is marketing its pumps and compressors to advanced recycling facilities, citing the roughly 400 million tonnes of plastic waste generated each year, with about 85% landfilled and 98% made from virgin fossil feedstock. The article outlines three process categories: gasification at 500 to 1,300°C, pyrolysis at 300 to 900°C, and depolymerization. Sundyne's offering spans PPI diaphragm compressors, integrally geared compressors with 5,000 units installed, LMV pumps, sealless magnetic drive pumps, Marelli pumps and Sunflo pumps.

Sundyne is positioning its pump and compressor portfolio as core process equipment for the growing advanced recycling sector.

The waste problem driving investment

The commercial case for advanced recycling starts with the scale of plastic waste. The world generates about 400 million tonnes of plastic waste annually, and approximately 85% of plastic waste ends up in landfills. Meanwhile, 98% of plastic is made from virgin fossil fuel feedstock, according to figures cited from the United Nations Environment Programme.

"Some forecasts suggest that volume could triple by 2050 with economic growth and increases in global population."

Advanced Recycling uses thermochemical reactions to break plastics down into liquid or gas molecules. It expands the scope of waste that can be recycled compared to traditional mechanical recycling, and it recovers molecular building blocks of waste plastic for use as feedstock. Sundyne frames the technology as a complement, not a replacement, for reduction efforts:

"Direct methods of reducing consumption of plastic products and eliminating single-use plastic products are two primary ways of addressing plastic pollution."
"Advanced Recycling offers an additional solution by increasing the amount of waste than can be recycled."

The approach also helps offset demand for new fossil plastic production and reduces the amount of waste in landfills, waterways, and the ocean.

Three processes, three equipment demands

There are three main categories of advanced recycling processes, and each imposes different duties on rotating equipment. Gasification breaks down plastic at 500 to 1,300°C in the presence of oxygen and/or steam to produce syngas. Pyrolysis operates at 300 to 900°C with little or no oxygen to produce pyrolysis oil. Depolymerization uses chemical treatment, typically on PET waste, to recover monomers.

What Sundyne is offering

Sundyne has 75 years of experience in providing rotating equipment to industrial facilities, and it is applying that background to advanced recycling with a line-up spanning both pumps and compressors:

  • PPI diaphragm compressors: — engineered for ultra-pure compression of hydrocarbon products and critical gases, with a sealed design requiring no lubrication on the gas side.
  • Sundyne integrally geared compressors: — developed from more than 70 years of technological advancement, with 5,000 units installed worldwide and up to 7 years of continuous operation.
  • Sundyne LMV pumps: — optimized for low flow-high head applications with high efficiency and reliability, using a single high-speed impeller in place of a multistage design.
  • Sealless Magnetic Drive Pumps: — HMD Kontro metallic pumps and Ansimag ETFE-lined sealless pumps for harsh and hazardous liquids, with no seals or seal support systems.
  • Marelli pumps: — backed by a track record of more than 60 years in centrifugal pump design.
  • Sunflo pumps: — industrial grade units for low flow-high head duties such as boiler feed water and condensate service.
