BYD Recruits 8,000 Workers at Xi’an Hub as Export Demand Outpaces Domestic Recovery

BYD is hiring more than 8,000 workers across multiple plants at its Xi’an production base, the automaker’s largest manufacturing hub, according to recruitment notices reported by Yicai. The move signals that overseas demand — not domestic sales — is now driving capacity decisions at the heart of BYD’s vertically integrated supply chain.

A Rebound Driven by Exports

The hiring push follows a period of constrained output earlier this year tied to production line upgrades. During that downtime, BYD temporarily reduced its Xi’an workforce and transferred some employees to expanding operations in Zhengzhou, Hefei and the Shenzhen-Shanwei cooperation zone.

The recovery has been sharp. Vehicle production in Shaanxi province, where Xi’an sits, fell nearly 50% year-on-year over the first seven months of 2026. But August 2026 output alone reached 138,900 vehicles — up 55.4% from July and 17.9% year-on-year.

That assessment comes from Feng Lei, head of the industrial research institute at market research firm HSMAP. He noted that export-facing models currently run full production schedules, while domestic-market vehicles continue to face intense competition — making a full return to peak annual output harder to achieve.

Skilled Labour, Not General Labour

The recruitment targets skilled positions in welding, painting and final assembly. Signing bonuses can reach up to CN¥6,000 (US$890), with monthly pay reaching CN¥10,000 — compensation levels that point to demand for experienced production workers.

The stakes are clear in BYD’s August 2026 numbers. The company sold a record 440,293 new energy vehicles that month, up 17.8% year-on-year. Overseas sales surged 134.5% to a record 189,466 vehicles, while domestic sales fell 14.3%. Xi’an builds high-volume models from BYD’s Dynasty and Ocean lineups, and the site has a combined annual capacity of up to 1.5 million vehicles across four factory phases. It produced over one million vehicles in 2024 alone.

China Remains the Manufacturing Core

The Xi’an surge also undercuts any assumption that BYD’s overseas footprint is replacing its domestic base. Core components — including Blade Battery cells and e-Platform 3.0 powertrains — continue to be produced within China’s vertically integrated domestic supply chain. Regional plants in markets like Thailand, Brazil and Hungary primarily serve as tariff-compliant assembly sites rather than independent manufacturing operations. Even as BYD plans to establish three local assembly plants and a battery factory in Europe, the company’s export growth remains tied to domestic hubs like Xi’an.

For manufacturing professionals, the implication is practical: any renewed constraint at Xi’an — from labour shortages or component bottlenecks — would likely surface as an export delay in Europe or Latin America well before it registers as a regional production problem.
