  • Hands-on exposure: Attendees toured the facility, watched a live CNC machining demonstration transforming raw material into finished components, and saw the unveiling of a 54" precision-machined Freedom Tower.
  • Skills and advancement discussed: Panelists shared their career journeys, the skills employers seek, and advancement opportunities in advanced technology, computer programming, engineering, technical applications, and management roles.
  • Broad leadership turnout: Local, state, and federal officials attended, including U.S. Representative Jim McGovern and representatives from MassMEP, the Massachusetts Office of Business Development, the Worcester Regional Chamber of Commerce, and the Town of West Boylston.

A Hands-On Look at Modern Manufacturing

The event gave students a hands-on introduction to career opportunities in machining, CNC programming, engineering, and manufacturing. Attendees toured the facility, experienced live demonstrations of manufacturing processes, and heard directly from engineers, machinists, and programmers about how they launched their careers and the skills they use every day.

Bob Hellinger, President of EMUGE-FRANKEN USA, framed the event around workforce development:

"Manufacturing offers tremendous opportunities for young people who enjoy working with technology, solving problems and seeing the results of their work. We wanted students to see firsthand what modern manufacturing looks like and more importantly, meet the people who are already in rewarding careers in our industry."

Hellinger opened the event with a discussion of EMUGE-FRANKEN USA's role in supporting manufacturing worldwide and its impact on key industries including aerospace, medical, automotive, defense, and energy.

From Raw Material to Finished Component

A live CNC machining demonstration showed attendees how CNC technology and programming transform raw material into finished components — a real-world illustration of the connection between digital programming and physical manufacturing. Students and community leaders also toured the facility to learn about the design and manufacturing of precision cutting tools used to produce components for some of the world's most advanced products.

A special technology showcase featured the unveiling of a 54" precision-machined Freedom Tower, created in collaboration with manufacturing technology partners. Each participating school also received a commemorative keepsake featuring its school logo.

Career Paths Beyond the Stereotypes

The event concluded with a career panel titled "Paths Into Manufacturing," featuring professionals from manufacturing, machining, engineering, CAM software, technical applications, and shop-floor operations. Panelists discussed their career journeys, the skills employers seek, and opportunities for career advancement. The discussion highlighted career paths in advanced technology, computer programming, engineering, technical applications, and management roles — a range that extends well beyond traditional perceptions of manufacturing work.

Broad Institutional Support

Local, state, and federal officials, along with workforce and economic development leaders, were present at the event. Attendees included Matt Berard, Associate Director of Workforce Development at MassMEP; Laura Arnold, Workforce Development Pipeline Specialist at MassMEP; U.S. Representative Jim McGovern, representing Massachusetts' 2nd Congressional District; Kayanna James, District Director for State Senator Robyn Kennedy; Ken Bergeron, District Director for State Representative James O'Day; Kevin Kuros, Central Region Director at the Massachusetts Office of Business Development; Darnell Dunn, Director of Business Recruitment at the Worcester Regional Chamber of Commerce; Marc Frieden, Economic Development and Planning for the Town of West Boylston; and Michael Ward, Town Administrator for the Town of West Boylston, where the facility is located.
