The partnership aims to develop a long-term framework for creating next-generation aluminum alloys for 3D printing.

  • EOS and Constellium have formed a strategic partnership to integrate advanced aluminum alloys into metal additive manufacturing.
  • EOS Aluminium Constellium CP1 and Al5X1 will be added to both companies' portfolios, offering improved processing and performance for high-demand applications.
  • Benefits include enhanced material access, superior performance, and increased productivity for manufacturers in aerospace, automotive, and semiconductor industries.
  • This collaboration sets a new benchmark for aluminum in additive manufacturing, driving innovation and industrial adoption.

Problem

The additive manufacturing (AM) industry has long sought advanced aluminum alloys that can meet the stringent demands of high-performance applications, such as aerospace, automotive, and semiconductor components. Traditional aluminum alloys often fall short in terms of strength, thermal conductivity, and processability, limiting the potential of metal AM in these sectors.

Solution

EOS, a leader in metal additive manufacturing, has announced a groundbreaking partnership with Constellium, a global leader in innovative aluminum solutions. This collaboration aims to integrate Constellium's cutting-edge aluminum alloys into EOS's materials portfolio, specifically targeting applications in metal AM.

Key Developments:

  • EOS Aluminium Constellium CP1: This alloy, previously known as Aheadd CP1, will be incorporated into EOS's materials portfolio starting in August. It is designed to offer improved processing characteristics and performance advantages over existing AlSi10Mg applications, making it an attractive option for manufacturers seeking high-performance, cost-effective solutions.
  • EOS Aluminium Constellium Al5X1: Formerly EOS's award-winning Aluminium Al5X1, this alloy will be rebranded and added to Constellium's portfolio. It is engineered for demanding applications in aerospace, transportation, and motorsport, offering high strength, high elongation, and excellent anodization properties.
"This partnership represents a unique opportunity to bring next-generation aluminum alloys into industrial additive manufacturing at scale," said Ludovic Piquier, Senior Vice President, Manufacturing Excellence and Chief Technical Officer at Constellium. "By combining Constellium’s alloy development expertise with EOS’ leadership in AM, we aim to accelerate innovation and unlock new high-performance applications for customers worldwide."

The partnership extends beyond these two specific materials, with both companies committed to developing a long-term framework for creating next-generation aluminum alloys tailored for 3D printing.

Results

The collaboration is expected to deliver significant benefits to users of EOS and AMCM laser powder bed fusion systems:

  • Enhanced Material Access: Manufacturers will gain access to advanced aluminum materials with validated process parameters, streamlining the adoption of AM for critical applications such as heat exchangers, semiconductor heat sinks, and lightweight structural components.
  • Performance and Productivity Gains: EOS Aluminium Constellium CP1 and Al5X1 are projected to offer superior performance and productivity compared to traditional aluminum alloys, enabling faster industrial adoption and opening new avenues for innovation.
"With EOS Aluminium Constellium CP1, EOS Aluminium Constellium Al5X1, and our partnership with Constellium, we are setting a new benchmark for aluminium in additive manufacturing," said Joachim Zettler, Chief Technology Officer, EOS. "Together, we are enabling higher performance, greater productivity, and faster industrial adoption for our customers."
