Manufacturing expansion continues, and manufacturers say they are prepared to invest. A September report highlighted the industry's growth, with 12 manufacturing industries reporting expansion while two reported contraction.

That split matters. The headline signal is momentum; the underlying signal is unevenness. Manufacturers are challenged but remain confident about growth, and the spending posture points to continued commitment rather than retreat.

The labor constraint is structural

The workforce picture is not a side issue. An aging workforce and the reshoring drive are contributing to the skilled labor shortage, and IndustryWeek’s podcast coverage explores how manufacturers are addressing it.

The people side of the business also showed up in Manufacturing Day 2026 celebrations featuring Honda, Lincoln Electric, and Rockwell Automation. In the “Faces of Manufacturing” coverage, the message from the plant floor and product strategy ranks was consistent: learning, accomplishment, and problem-solving keep people engaged.

“I'm still learning something every day, and I'm not done.”

— Charles Thomas, team lead and ambassador, Big Ass Fans

“That sense of accomplishment is what keeps me coming back to work every day.”

— Sam Stoltzfus, R&D technician, Armstrong World Industries

“For me, that combination of innovation, problem-solving and seeing an idea come to life is what makes manufacturing so rewarding.”

— Rosa Leal, Director, Commercial Product Strategy/CX, U.S. Air Rheem North America

Process discipline still decides outcomes

The improvement toolkit is getting renewed scrutiny. The podcast “Effective Gemba Walks: The Importance of Leader Curiosity” discusses key behaviors for lean and continuous improvement tools, with the episode focused on gemba walks as a lean tool.

The caution is just as important as the enthusiasm. “Lean Myths Debunked” states that true success is defined by long-term sustainability rather than initial implementation. In other words, an event is not the finish line; sustained performance is.

AI adds another timing problem. “Manufacturers Can’t Transform at the Speed of AI” discusses the collision of different timelines in AI adoption—a reminder that technology cycles and factory-floor change rarely move at the same pace.
