A first flight at commercial scale

Heart Aerospace has completed the first flight of its X1 demonstrator aircraft, and the numbers matter. The flight took place on August 12, 2026, at Heart's X1 flight-test base at Plattsburgh International Airport in upstate New York. It lasted 27 minutes and reached an altitude of 1,100ft above ground level.

The X1 is not a small science project. The aircraft has a wingspan of 106ft, measures 76ft nose to tail, and weighs over 25,000 lb at takeoff. Its all-electric propulsion system delivered more than 1MW of power during the mission. The flight was conducted under an FAA Special Airworthiness Certificate in the Experimental Category.

The economics behind the engineering

For manufacturing and operations professionals, the cost figures are arguably the headline. X1 is powered entirely by batteries and used approximately $5 worth of electricity during its first flight. That figure lands against a backdrop of jet fuel prices averaging $3.50 per gallon, up 63% year over year — a spread that frames the business case for electric propulsion about as starkly as any single flight could.

From demonstrator to production: the ES-30 path

The X1 exists to de-risk what comes next: the ES-30 production aircraft. The ES-30 is a 30-seat hybrid-electric regional airliner designed for FAA Part 25 certification, with entry into service targeted for 2031. Heart Aerospace expects the ES-30 to reduce aircraft operating costs by more than 40% compared with legacy regional aircraft.

Customer commitments are already on the books from United Airlines, Air Canada, and JSX — and the airlines are saying so publicly.

Building the manufacturing capability

Heart Aerospace is currently developing the first pre-production ES-30 at its pilot manufacturing plant in Los Angeles, California, with flight testing scheduled to begin in 2028. Chief technology officer Ben Stabler frames the X1 program as an organizational proof point — a demonstration that the company can design, build, test, and operate a clean-sheet electric commercial aircraft, and carry that capability into production.

The complexity here is real: a demonstrator flight validates propulsion and airframe at scale, but the path to FAA Part 25 certification and a 2031 service entry is long.
