Onkos Surgical has announced the completion of its 1,000th case using the My3D patient-specific pelvic implant platform, a milestone the company says reflects the impact of 3D printing technology and personalised approaches to orthopaedic cases.

For manufacturing professionals watching the maturation of additive manufacturing in medical devices, the figure matters. One thousand cases is no longer a pilot program or a niche experiment — it is a production-scale workflow built around individual patient anatomy.

How the platform works

The My3D platform combines collaborative case planning, advanced imaging, 3D anatomic modelling, and patient-specific implant design. Onkos Surgical says the platform also helps reduce delivery times for pelvic implants — a meaningful claim in a clinical environment where scheduling pressure is constant and one-off parts traditionally carry long lead times.

The company's personalised approach is designed to understand each patient's unique anatomy, translating imaging data into an implant tailored to the individual case rather than adapting a standard device to fit.

Jeff Barry, Associate Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery and Director of the Adult Reconstruction Hip and Knee Fellowship at the UCSF Department of Orthopaedic Surgery in San Francisco, CA, framed the milestone in procedural terms.

"Pelvic and acetabular reconstruction is an ideal procedure to leverage cutting-edge digital planning and personalised implants," Barry said. That last point is worth sitting with. The pitch for patient-specific manufacturing has often been couched in future tense. A four-figure case count suggests the present tense has arrived — at least for this application.
