EOS has joined the MAT-H2 consortium, a collaborative initiative focused on advancing materials and technologies that support the transition to the hydrogen economy.

Why Materials Are the Bottleneck

Hydrogen is expected to play a key role in reducing emissions across energy-intensive industries and power generation. But there's a catch that manufacturing engineers know well: hydrogen environments place demanding requirements on metallic materials. That makes the development of suitable materials — and the processes to manufacture them — essential before widespread adoption can happen.

What EOS Brings to the Table

EOS will contribute its expertise in metal material development and additive manufacturing (AM) to support the reliable and efficient use of hydrogen-powered systems.

"Hydrogen will play an important role in the future energy landscape, but its successful adoption depends on solving complex material challenges. Additive manufacturing is a key enabler in this process, creating new opportunities to develop, test, and optimise materials and components for hydrogen environments with greater speed and flexibility," said Paula Kainu, Industrial Manager Energy at EOS.
"Through the MAT-H2 consortium, EOS is helping bridge the gap between research and industrial implementation by contributing expertise in metal AM, material characterisation, and application-driven development."

The Consortium Structure

The MAT-H2 consortium brings together leading industrial and research organisations to address material-related challenges in hydrogen applications. It is built around Wärtsilä's hydrogen-related development activities, known as WISE — Wide and Intelligent Sustainable Energy — a Business Finland co-funded collaboration.

The consortium's membership spans industry and academia. Alongside EOS, participants include Neste, Nordic Tank, Teknos, SSAB, Bumax, SP Stainless, and Wärtsilä, with VTT and the University of Oulu serving as research partners.

The framing here matters: rather than developing materials in isolation, the consortium structure is designed to connect research output directly to industrial implementation — precisely the gap EOS says it intends to help close.
