M4S Take

Last month, 12 manufacturing industries reported growth, while two reported contraction, according to the ISM. This data reflects a broad-based momentum rather than a few standout segments driving the progress.

The confidence is not just reflected in the indices. A separate survey found that manufacturers are facing challenges but remain confident about growth and are prepared to invest. The challenges leaders are dealing with are familiar, yet their spending priorities indicate that the optimism is supported by concrete capital plans, not just sentiment.

The Workforce Challenge

Growth trends are meaningless without the workforce to operate the machinery. The shortage of skilled labor remains a critical constraint, influenced by two compounding factors: an aging workforce and the reshoring movement. IndustryWeek's Anna Smith discussed how manufacturers are tackling this gap in the podcast The 2026 Skilled Labor Shortage and How Manufacturers Are Bridging the Gap.

The industry's response is evident in its own narratives. Manufacturing Day 2026 celebrations showcased companies like Honda, Lincoln Electric, and Rockwell Automation, which opened their operations to attract the next generation of workers. The Faces of Manufacturing series illustrates the potential of this pipeline, following one worker's journey from temporary worker to team lead and ambassador at Big Ass Fans.

Charles Thomas, now a team lead and ambassador at Big Ass Fans, stated:

"I'm still learning something every day, and I'm not done."

Sam Stoltzfus, an R&D technician at Armstrong World Industries, describes the appeal in terms familiar to any engineer:

"That sense of accomplishment is what keeps me coming back to work every day."

Air Rheem North America highlights the work itself:

"For me, that combination of innovation, problem-solving and seeing an idea come to life is what makes manufacturing so rewarding."

Scrutinizing Continuous Improvement

The continuous improvement toolkit is also under greater scrutiny. The podcast Effective Gemba Walks: The Importance of Leader Curiosity, hosted by John Dyer and Dr. Mohamed Saleh, initiates a series examining the key behaviors that determine whether lean tools deliver results, starting with gemba walks. The core idea is that the tool is less important than the curiosity leaders bring to it.

A similar critical perspective applies to kaizen. Lean Myths Debunked: A Successful Kaizen Event Means the Problem Is Solved contends that true success is measured by long-term sustainability rather than the initial implementation. A clean event report is not the end goal.

Meanwhile, Manufacturers Can't Transform at the Speed of AI. So What Should They Do? portrays digital adoption as the intersection of two fundamentally different timelines — the rapid pace of technology versus the slower, more deliberate pace of the plant floor. This tension is something to be acknowledged rather than rushed through.
