2026: — Vehicles now generate more data and connect to more systems than ever before, yet the industry remains connected rather than truly connected as an ecosystem. That is the assessment of Simon Boyd, UK Thought Leader for trusted, scalable IoT connectivity at Deutsche Telekom, who argues that the gap between today's deployments and genuine connected mobility is both technical and operational.

The Ecosystem Gap

Full connected mobility, Boyd contends, requires vehicles, infrastructure, platforms, operators, and public systems to exchange trusted data reliably. The biggest barriers include cybersecurity and data governance — disciplines that must be designed in from the start rather than bolted on.

"The industry should treat connectivity less like a feature and more like infrastructure."

Defining the Terms

Precision in language matters for engineering decisions. Boyd draws a clear line between capabilities that are too often conflated: a truly connected vehicle can securely exchange relevant data with the right systems throughout its operational life; smart vehicles interpret data to improve user or operational experiences; and autonomous vehicles perform driving tasks without human intervention.

"A connected vehicle is not automatically smart, and a smart vehicle is not automatically autonomous."

Where V2X Delivers Value Now

Boyd points to V2X applications such as hazard warnings, roadworks alerts, and emergency vehicle awareness as the use cases delivering the most immediate value. But he is explicit that vehicles alone cannot carry the burden.

The Fleet and Lifecycle Opportunity

For fleet operators, vehicle tracking, route optimization, driver behavior analysis, and predictive maintenance are already delivering measurable impact. Yet two areas remain underexploited: decision intelligence — turning collected data into action — and cross-border resilience.

"Many fleets already collect large volumes of data, but not all of it is turned into action."

For OEMs, Boyd sees a strategic shift from transaction-based to lifecycle customer relationships, enabled by connected platforms. Predictive maintenance, battery health, and charging optimization stand out as key service opportunities.

"The vehicle is becoming a digital product with a long physical lifecycle."

The Connectivity Stack

No single technology covers every use case. eSIM, LTE-M, NB-IoT, and 5G each play specific roles: eSIM provides flexibility across markets and vehicle lifespans, while 5G supports advanced services. Telecommunications providers, Boyd argues, must help automotive companies manage complexity across global connectivity, security, and network resilience.

Looking ahead, his benchmark is unambiguous.

"Success should not be measured by how many vehicles are technically connected. It should be measured by how many connected services reliably work under real-world conditions."
