Hydraulic systems do much of the heavy lifting on any aircraft. They convert and channel pressurised fluid to power critical flight components — landing gear, brakes, and flight control systems among them. Yet they rarely fail suddenly. Latent issues can go undetected and compound over time, eventually surfacing as costly, preventable failures that erode fleet availability.

For engineers and maintenance managers, that failure profile has a direct implication: fluid selection and fluid management are not procurement afterthoughts. They are engineering decisions.

The false economy of cheap fluids

Uncertified, lower-cost hydraulic fluids tend to cost more over the life of a system. Higher fuel burn, accelerated fluid degradation, and increased maintenance demands all trace back to fluid quality. The stakes rise further on modern aircraft, where hydraulic systems can see temperatures beyond 200°C. Using the wrong fluid class under those conditions introduces severe risk.

Contamination compounds the problem. Moisture ingress can trigger hydrolysis in degraded fluids, producing corrosive acids that attack vital components. For operators running mixed fleets — where each airframe carries distinct OEM requirements — a single-fluid shortcut chosen purely for inventory convenience can be more hazardous than helpful. Compatibility matters as much as chemistry.

Consolidation without compromise

ExxonMobil Aviation positions its HyJet IV-A plus, HyJet V, and Mobil Aero HF product lines as a route to consolidation that respects OEM boundaries. Mobil HyJet Hydraulic fluids carry approvals from Boeing, Airbus, Embraer, and Bombardier, allowing airlines to consolidate fluid inventory, cut maintenance costs, and reduce the operational complexity — and cross-contamination exposure — of managing multiple products.

The chemistry is doing real work here. ExxonMobil's formulations are designed to prevent fluid breakdown and hydrolysis-induced contamination, delivering enhanced deposit control and protection against wear, rust, and corrosion. A low-density composition also helps reduce aircraft weight and lower fuel burn — a meaningful gain given that legacy aircraft can consume up to 20% more fuel than next-generation models.

Kalitta Air puts standardisation to the test

Cargo carrier Kalitta Air offers a working case study. Operating a mixed freighter fleet, the carrier converted its hydraulic fluid to ExxonMobil's HyJet IV-Aplus to optimise operations and improve fleet reliability. The transition was executed using the "top-off" method, which limited the maintenance downtime required for the conversion.

Kevin Jackson, maintenance fleet manager at Kalitta Air, pointed to the human-factors benefit of running one product across the fleet:

The engineering takeaway
