On a recent episode of Great Question: A Manufacturing Podcast, IndustryWeek Senior Staff Writer Anna Smith walked through new research from Lightcast, the Reshoring Initiative, Regions Recruiting, Deloitte and the Manufacturing Institute, and the picture that emerges is stark: demand for skilled trades workers is accelerating on multiple fronts at once.

A Workforce That Is Aging Out

Lightcast's data frames the scale of the problem. Skilled trades — defined as occupations requiring an apprenticeship, certificate or associate's degree rather than a four-year degree — account for 9% of all U.S. jobs, with 60% of those concentrated in construction and manufacturing. For every person who completes a training program, the skilled trades have three job openings. That arithmetic produces a talent gap of 1.3 million workers.

Demographics make the trajectory worse, not better. Around 25% of skilled trades workers are 55 or older, meaning retirements will steadily drain the existing pipeline. And manufacturers cannot count on the rest of the economy to absorb the slack: the rapid growth of data centers is adding its own demand for skilled workers, competing for the same limited pool.

Reshoring Raises the Stakes

At the same time, more work is coming home. According to the 2026 USA Reshoring Survey Report from the Reshoring Initiative and Regions Recruiting, 36% of OEMs surveyed say they have reshored or are actively executing additional reshoring, up from 29%. Among contract manufacturers, 31% report having reshored or actively reshoring.

The hiring consequence is severe: 66% of respondents say hiring technicians such as welders and machinists is very difficult or at a crisis level.

How Manufacturers Are Responding

The response, per the survey data, is multi-channel. Trade or vocational schools lead the way, used by 61% of respondents to fill skilled trades roles, followed by internal upskilling or reskilling programs (58%), community college partnerships (51%), third-party staffing and recruiting agencies (46%) and apprenticeships (43%).

There is also a technology angle worth noting — and it cuts against a common assumption. Lightcast found that roughly 70% of skilled trades jobs carry an AI exposure score below 30%, meaning these occupations are among the least likely to be displaced by automation. Instead, analysis from Deloitte and the Manufacturing Institute suggests AI can work for the workforce: embedded expertise and guidance can lower barriers to entry for technician roles, reducing dependence on prior experience — a meaningful advantage as veteran workers retire. Their analysis also identifies adjacent industries whose technicians hold overlapping capabilities that could transfer into manufacturing, effectively widening the recruiting funnel.

The Takeaway

The shortage is structural, driven simultaneously by retirements, reshoring and new sources of demand like data centers. But the tools to respond — training partnerships, apprenticeships, upskilling, adjacent-industry recruiting and AI-assisted knowledge transfer — are already in use. The open question, as the podcast makes clear in its 5:50 runtime, is whether manufacturers deploy them fast enough to match the pace of demand.
