Performance envelope: 603 hp, 100 km/h in 3.9 seconds, 149 mph top speed, and a 112.2 kW/h battery accepting up to 400 kW.

  • Production timeline: The BMW iX3 M60 xDrive enters production in Debrecen, Hungary, in spring 2027, with US orders from late January.
  • Powertrain change: A revised rear electrically excited synchronous motor gains a new stator and a 420 A inverter, up from 300 A.
  • Control software: The Heart of Joy computer coordinates drive, braking, steering, and recuperation up to 10 times faster than earlier systems, with the SUV slowing almost entirely through recuperation in daily use.
  • Undisclosed items: BMW has not released pricing or range; M Yellow Lights and Highway Assistant (hands-free up to 85 mph) are optional.

A Performance Flagship for the First Neue Klasse SUV

BMW has detailed the BMW iX3 M60 xDrive, a 603 hp M Performance version of the first Neue Klasse model. Production begins in Debrecen, Hungary, in spring 2027, with US orders starting from late January, according to reporting by Automotive World.

The performance figures put the drivetrain's capability in clear terms. The vehicle accelerates to 100 km/h in 3.9 seconds and reaches a top speed of 149 mph. A 112.2 kW/h battery accepts charging at up to 400 kW.

Where the Power Comes From

The extra output comes from a revised rear electrically excited synchronous motor. The unit gains a new stator and an inverter rated at 420 A, up from 300 A — a substantial increase in current capacity at the inverter stage, and a reminder that EV performance programs are often won or lost in power electronics rather than headline motor redesigns.

Chassis and Control Architecture

Adaptive M Suspension, variable-ratio sport steering, and an electronically controlled rear M Sport differential are standard features. Software carries much of the integration load.

"The Heart of Joy computer coordinates drive, braking, steering and recuperation up to 10 times faster than earlier systems."

In daily use, the SUV slows almost entirely through recuperation — an architecture choice with direct implications for brake wear and thermal management.

Options and Open Questions

M Yellow Lights and a Highway Assistant offering hands-free driving at up to 85 mph are optional features. BMW did not disclose pricing or range for the model, leaving two of the most commercially significant specifications unanswered ahead of the Debrecen ramp-up.
