Welcome to the IndustryWeek Weekly Review, where we regularly share with you the top read, watched, or listened to editorial content on IndustryWeek.com over the previous seven days. This latest edition is topped by our report on the 2026 IW 500, the 500 leading publicly held, U.S. manufacturing companies based on annual revenue. As you can imagine, the dollars under discussion are enormous.

Beyond the IW 500, the IW manufacturing community engaged with a variety of topics, all of which are listed below. Take a moment to catch up with the news and insights you may have missed. Here are this week's Top 10:

The IW 500: Big Dollars, Flat Trajectory

Topping the list is the 2026 IW 500, IndustryWeek's ranking of the 500 leading publicly held U.S. manufacturing companies based on annual revenue. The headline finding is that while the dollars under discussion remain enormous, the overall financial performance of these companies has leveled off, indicating a period of stability rather than growth.

Clop Claims a Long Victim List

Cybersecurity remains a critical issue, and this week highlighted its importance. The Clop ransomware gang claimed responsibility for breaches at GE, Philips, Shell, and forty other companies. This widespread attack shifts the focus from individual defenses to the systemic vulnerabilities across the supply chain.

Trade, Retail, and a Choked Waterway

On the economic front, U.S. retail sales saw a sharp decline in July 2026. Meanwhile, the U.S. and Canada are nearing the finalization of a trade deal, with the threat of 50% U.S. tariffs on select Canadian goods influencing the negotiations.

In the Strait of Hormuz, data on transit activity, oil prices, petroleum reserves, supply chain impacts, and geopolitical developments indicate that vessel traffic is constrained. The combination of stalled diplomacy and an expired Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) is affecting one of the world's most critical energy corridors, which is a significant concern for manufacturers reliant on stable energy costs and predictable freight.

AI, Missiles, and Middle Management

Two technology and policy threads also captured attention. On AI adoption, the key takeaway is that embedding AI at scale requires not just technical implementation but also job redesign and cultural adaptation. On defense industrial policy, the discussion centers on a shortage of production capacity rather than a shortage of missiles, highlighting the need for a robust industrial base.

More Dealmaking Ahead

Expect continued consolidation in the industry. Schrimsher, a CEO speaking to investors, noted an active mergers-and-acquisitions environment, driven by factors such as competition and private-equity ownership. The expectation is for more M&A activity in the coming year.
