Partnership advantage: Organizations collaborating with third-party partners score significantly higher on overall manufacturing wellness.

  • Industry benchmark: Sandvik Coromant's first Manufacturing Wellness Report scored nearly 1,000 manufacturers at 49 out of 100 overall, reflecting strong foundations but unrealized potential.
  • Data and target gaps: Nearly one in four organizations lack access to manufacturing or process-related data, and almost half lack clear understanding of team performance targets.
  • Circularity and automation lag: Only 19% of organizations have a formal circularity policy, while 69% report at least some automation in manufacturing operations.
  • Self-assessment available: The 28-question Manufacturing Wellness Assessment takes around 10 minutes and gives manufacturers their own score with identified strengths and improvement areas.

Sandvik Coromant has released its first-ever Manufacturing Wellness Report, benchmarking nearly 1,000 manufacturers against a set of habits linked to resilience, productivity, and sustainable growth. The headline finding: an overall manufacturing wellness score of 49 out of 100.

That number tells a story most manufacturing professionals will recognize. The industry understands what good performance looks like. Embedding it consistently across operations is another matter.

Where the gaps show up

The report suggests manufacturers are taking steps to improve, but progress remains uneven — and the data backs that up.

Nearly one in four organizations report having no access to manufacturing or process-related data. Almost half say they do not have a clear understanding of the performance targets set for their teams. On sustainability, intent is outpacing structure: only 19% of organizations report having a formal circularity policy.

Automation shows a similar split. While 69% of respondents report at least some automation in manufacturing operations, the broader picture is one of partial adoption rather than connected, end-to-end deployment.

Partnerships correlate with higher scores

One finding stands out for shops weighing their supplier and integrator relationships: organizations that collaborate with third-party partners score significantly higher on overall manufacturing wellness. For engineering teams building out their external networks, that correlation is worth noting.

The path forward, per Sandvik Coromant

"Our first global Manufacturing Wellness Report shows an industry with strong foundations, but also significant unrealized potential," said Helen Blomqvist, President of Sandvik Coromant. "Manufacturers are collecting data, investing in technology and identifying skills gaps. The challenge now is to connect these efforts into a structured approach that improves performance across the whole value chain."

The report indicates that many manufacturers are already collecting more data, investing in digital tools, exploring automation, and taking steps to improve circularity. Sandvik Coromant argues that the next stage is not more technology for its own sake — it's connecting existing tools, people, and processes through a clearer, more holistic strategy.

"The positive message from the report is that manufacturers are not starting from zero," Blomqvist said.

Benchmark your own operation

Alongside the report, Sandvik Coromant's Manufacturing Wellness Assessment is available online. The 28-question tool takes around 10 minutes to complete and provides manufacturers with their own score, helping them identify strengths and improvement areas across their production setup.

The report's message is blunt: the assets are largely in place. Making them work together is the job now.
