Workforce growth: Employment has risen from around 25 people at the site's opening to around 950 today.

  • Footprint expansion: Usable space now stands at 617,000 sq ft (57,350 sqm), rising to 880,000 sq ft (81,765 sqm) once the next hall is completed, doubling the site's size.
  • Production scale: Around £150 million invested to date, including 134 CNC machine tools producing around one million parts per month.
  • Sustainability commitment: New halls are designed to achieve Net Zero Carbon in Operation, supporting Renishaw's goal of Net Zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2028.

Renishaw is celebrating the 15th anniversary of its purchase of the Miskin site in South Wales — and doing so with the completion of the first phase of a further £70 million development announced in 2022. When finished, the investment will double the size of the site, expanding manufacturing capacity for the company's precision metrology products, additive manufacturing products and position measurement products.

From 25 employees to around 950

Renishaw acquired the Miskin site, located west of Cardiff, from Robert Bosch Ltd in September 2011. Operations began modestly: at the time of the facility's formal opening by then First Minister of Wales, Carwyn Jones, employee numbers stood at around 25. Today the site employs around 950 people.

The growth in footprint has been just as striking. With the first development phase complete, usable space has grown to 617,000 sq ft (57,350 sqm). Once the next hall is completed, total space will reach 880,000 sq ft (81,765 sqm).

Capacity backed by serious capital

Renishaw has invested around £150 million in the site to date — covering acquisition, refurbishment of legacy buildings, development of the new halls and installation of advanced manufacturing equipment. That equipment base now includes 134 CNC machine tools producing around one million parts per month.

The completed first-phase hall is used to manufacture the company's metal additive manufacturing (AM) systems and AGILITY® co-ordinate measuring machines (CMMs).

Designed for Net Zero

The expansion is not purely about floor space.

The company has also invested in a new employee wellbeing centre at Miskin, while the wider development includes landscaped external spaces, picnic areas and a 2 km perimeter walking route.

A long-term bet on UK manufacturing

The expansion reinforces Renishaw's commitment to South Wales and the UK — a point emphasised by Jim Long, Director of Group Manufacturing:

“Our long-term commitment to manufacturing is exemplified by the investment that we have made in Miskin over the past 15 years and I would like to thank the many people from across our business who have supported the development of this world-class facility.”
“The significant ongoing investment by our Board to increase our production capabilities demonstrates a huge vote of confidence in our manufacturing operations and people, at an exciting time for the business.”

For manufacturing professionals, the message is clear: this is a sustained, long-horizon investment in capacity, skills and low-carbon production — not a one-off expansion.
