Renishaw's PH20 PLUS Pushes 5-Axis Touch-Trigger Reach to 300 mm

Renishaw is introducing the PH20 PLUS 5-axis touch-trigger system for coordinate measuring machines (CMMs), a direct replacement for the established PH20 head. The headline figure: with a 50 mm stylus, the new head delivers a maximum working length of up to 300 mm — an increase of over 50% in inspection reach compared to the original PH20.

That extra reach matters. Access to features deep inside parts and hard-to-reach areas has long been a constraint for touch-trigger measurement, and Renishaw is addressing it without asking users to abandon their existing investment.

Building on a Proven Platform

The original PH20 touch-trigger system was launched in 2010 and utilizes head motion technology from the REVO® 5-axis measurement system. The PH20 PLUS builds on that foundation, enabling high-speed touch-trigger measurement across a wider range of applications.

The key mechanical change is a redesigned A-axis featuring a new kinematic mount that supports longer and heavier probe configurations. The system supports a wider range of probe module extensions, delivering an additional 107 mm of reach. New PE20 modules, based on the industry standard TP20 probe system, interface directly with the PH20 PLUS head.

"With PH20 PLUS, we've focused on extending capability which we think will appeal to both existing PH20 customers and those with measurement requirements which could previously not be met by the existing head," said Nathan Fielder, Product Manager at Renishaw.

Protecting Existing Investment

Backwards compatibility is central to the design. The PH20 PLUS maintains compatibility with the existing range of TP20 probe modules, which can be used via the PB20 adaptor — allowing customers to keep current hardware, stylus configurations, and part programmes. The system can also be configured to match the effective working length of existing PH20 installations, simplifying upgrade decisions.

Integration is equally straightforward: the PH20 PLUS is fully compatible with Renishaw's UCC controller and integrates in the same way as the original PH20, making it a drop-in replacement.

Automated Module Changing

A new modular rack system supports automatic and repeatable probe module changing. It mounts to an MRS2 rail — installed on the CMM bed or machine frame — and includes configurable change ports for TP20 modules and temperature-controlled ports for PE20 modules. The powered PCR20 rack provides a standalone option for holding multiple probe modules and accessories.
