Renishaw has introduced the PH20 PLUS 5-axis touch-trigger system for coordinate measuring machines (CMMs), offering over 50% increase in inspection reach compared to the original PH20 head. For measurement engineers wrestling with features buried deep inside parts, that figure matters more than any headline claim.
The original PH20 touch-trigger system was launched in 2010 and utilizes head motion technology from the REVO® 5-axis measurement system. The PLUS variant keeps that foundation but targets the reach limitation head-on.
Where the extra reach comes from
The PH20 PLUS system features a redesigned kinematic mount that supports longer probe configurations. The result: the PH20 PLUS head offers a maximum working length of up to 300 mm with a 50 mm stylus — an increase of over 50%, and an additional 107 mm of reach over the original system. That extension is specifically aimed at improving access to features deep inside parts and in hard-to-reach areas.
"With PH20 PLUS, we've focused on extending capability which we think will appeal to both existing PH20 customers and those with measurement requirements which could previously not be met by the existing head," said Nathan Fielder, Product Manager at Renishaw.
That last phrase is telling. Renishaw is explicitly positioning the system at applications the existing head simply couldn't address — not just incremental improvement for current users.
Upgrade path and module compatibility
Backwards compatibility is central to the pitch. The PH20 PLUS system is compatible with the existing range of TP20 modules, excluding the extended force module, and existing modules can be used via the PB20 adaptor. New PE20 modules interface directly with the head's larger kinematic mount. The PH20 PLUS system is fully compatible with Renishaw's UCC controller, integrating as a direct replacement for existing installations.
A new modular rack system has been developed to support automatic and repeatable probe module changing with the PH20 PLUS head, mounting to an MRS2 rail. A powered PH20 PLUS PCR20 rack provides a standalone option for holding multiple probe modules and accessories.
