Renishaw Marks 15 Years at Miskin with £70 Million Expansion

  • The company celebrates the 15th anniversary of acquiring the Miskin site in South Wales.
  • A £70 million development, announced in 2022, is underway to double the facility's size.
  • The first phase has been completed, with further expansion planned to meet growing demand for precision metrology and additive manufacturing products.

Engineering technologies company Renishaw is celebrating the 15th anniversary of its purchase of the Miskin site in South Wales, alongside the completion of the first phase of a £70 million development announced in 2022. This investment will ultimately double the size of the Miskin site, expanding manufacturing capacity for the company's precision metrology products, additive manufacturing products, and position measurement products.

From 25 Employees to a Major Manufacturing Hub

Renishaw acquired the Miskin site, located to the west of Cardiff, from Robert Bosch Ltd in September 2011. The facility was formally opened in October 2012 by then First Minister of Wales, Carwyn Jones (now Lord Jones), at a time when employee numbers stood at around 25. Today, the site employs around 950 people.

The scale of the transformation is reflected in the physical footprint. Once Hall 4 is completed and operational, the facility will be one of the UK's largest advanced manufacturing sites.

In total, Renishaw has invested around £150 million in the site, covering acquisition, refurbishment, and the installation of manufacturing equipment. That equipment now includes 134 CNC machine tools producing around one million parts per month.

What the New Halls Deliver

Hall 3 is used to manufacture the company's metal additive manufacturing (AM) systems and AGILITY® co-ordinate measuring machines (CMMs). Hall 4 was constructed as a shell building, with its future utilisation dependent on sales demand and capacity requirements. Due to exceptional demand for Renishaw's position encoders from manufacturers of semiconductor equipment, driven by the growing adoption of artificial intelligence (AI), some of that additional capacity is now required.

Sustainability and People Built into the Plan

Alongside the manufacturing expansion, the company has invested in a new employee wellbeing centre featuring a restaurant and fitness suite, plus a 2 km perimeter walking route.

Jim Long, Director of Group Manufacturing, said:

“Our long-term commitment to manufacturing is exemplified by the investment that we have made in Miskin over the past 15 years and I would like to thank the many people from across our business who have supported the development of this world-class facility.”

He concluded:

“The significant ongoing investment by our Board to increase our production capabilities demonstrates a huge vote of confidence in our manufacturing operations and people, at an exciting time for the business.”
